Whoopi Goldberg Honors Black Lesbian Icon Moms Mabley with Documentary

Gather ’round, young ones, it’s time for your daily history lesson.  Now some of you may have never heard of her, but trust me, your favorite comedic stars list her as one of their biggest inspirations. Before there was a Wanda Sykes or a Mo’Nique, the world was blessed with the ORIGINAL cigarette-toting, no holds barred Queen of Comedy, Moms Mabley.  Now, Whoopi Goldberg has a new documentary honoring this extraordinary talent.

Born in the 1890s, Moms Mabley enjoyed a career that spanned over seven decades and worked with such literary and stage titans as Zora Neale Hurston and Paul Roberson.  Some may argue she didn’t even reach the zenith of her career until well into her sixties, which only speaks to her ability to transcend racism, sexism, and ageism.  But most importantly, to the ones who knew her,  she was “Mr. Moms,” a woman who unapologetically loved women.

Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley airs Monday, November 18th at 9 p.m. EST on HBO.  A trailblazer in countless fashions,  Moms Mabley is ranked in the highest echelon of comedic genius and we can’t wait to see what this documentary has in store!

In the meantime, check out what Moms had to say about the “Good Ol’ Days” below:
