Black HERstory Month: (Mary) Edmonia “Wildfire” Lewis (1843-1911)

(Mary) Edmonia “Wildfire” Lewis (1843-1911) is an American sculptor of African, Native American, and Haitian descent who was also a lesbian. Lewis sculpted notable pieces that today tell the struggles of African Americans and women in varying quests for freedom and independence. Pictured here is one of her more famous pieces entitled “Forever Free.”
